The house felt stuffy, the air thick with an unspoken tension. Susan, staring at the screen, felt a cold dread creep into her bones. Her son, Jake, was on the profile. He was there, but he was also gone.

Her pulse quickened. She felt a burning sensation in her stomach. She sat down, then stood back up. She felt a pressing need to move, to do something, to break the spell of the silence. She walked over to the door and started walking.

She paused. She looked through the window. She felt like she was stuck, a passenger in a stalled vehicle. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She took a deep breath. She had to find a way to navigate this.
