The hum of the refrigerator felt like a personal affront. He kept rubbing his hands together. “A rabbit, Alice? Really? We barely have enough space for ourselves.” The words came out sharper than intended.

He ran his hand along the top of the counter, feeling for dust, noticing the small cracks in the tiles. It all seemed critical. He felt an urge to reorganize, to scrub, to *fix* something, anything.

Alice smiled, completely unfazed. “It’ll be fun, Ben. Think of the cuddles!” Her nonchalance fueled his internal storm. “No, Alice. Absolutely not. It is simply not going to work.”
