He paced the length of the hospital waiting room, his steps short, erratic. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to hum with a discordant energy, amplifying the throbbing in his temples. He needed to find her. He had to. He saw her across the room, sitting with a man he didn't recognize. It was Sarah, the girl who bandaged his scraped knees and shared his silly jokes.

He swallowed hard, his throat dry. He moved toward her, his movements jerky and uncertain. He stood before her, his breath catching. "Sarah?" he choked out.

She looked up, her expression neutral. She tilted her head slightly, regarding him with polite interest. “Do I know you?” she asked, her voice soft, but devoid of any recognition. He felt a cold wave wash over him.
