Gemotions

The air in the library was still and hushed, but something inside Mark was anything but calm. He picked up the photograph with a feeling of disquiet. It showed his great-grandfather, the man described as a devoted husband and father, in a completely different light. He felt a sudden, forceful urge to look for more.

In the photo, he stood with another woman, a woman who wasn't his grandmother, in front of a grand house, a house completely different from the small family home. They held hands and looked lovingly at each other. Mark’s blood was thrumming in his ears.

The back of the photo was inscribed with "Arthur and Vivian, 1938." The familiar stories were now replaced with shadows and doubts.
