The email notification was innocuous, yet it sent a jolt through Maya. Her hands, usually steady, began to tremble slightly. The familiar office environment, with its muted beige walls and repetitive artwork, felt strange, alien. She reread the subject line: "Important Changes to Our Future." A knot formed in her gut. She’d been enjoying her job here, and the potential for a sale was something she'd thought about before, but never truly considered as a reality.

She took a deep, shaky breath, trying to calm herself. The air seemed to have thickened, making it harder to breathe. She noticed her co-workers were acting differently. A hushed silence had fallen over the office, punctuated by nervous glances and hurried conversations. Her boss had been shut in his office all day.

She couldn't bring herself to open the email immediately. Instead, she stared at the screen, her heart drumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She felt the sudden urge to run, to escape the suffocating weight of uncertainty. Finally, she took the plunge, her finger hovering over the mouse before clicking.
