Liam sat by the window, the city lights twinkling like scattered diamonds against the inky sky. He held the letter, its crisp paper a stark contrast to the rough texture of his calloused hands. It had arrived that morning, a confession from a man he had once considered a mentor. Years since the betrayal.

He re-read the words, the phrases like stones in his stomach. A wave of anger mixed with a strange kind of relief washed over him. The past felt very present. He stood and walked to the kitchen, opening the refrigerator with a jerk. The cold air rushed out, but it didn't calm him. He felt the need to act. He grabbed a beer.
