The antique floorboards creaked under Amelia's weight as she navigated the hallway, a hand outstretched to steady herself. Her eyes darted from shadow to shadow, each darkened corner seeming to hold a hidden observer. The realtor's words, "a little history, a bit of character," now echoed with a sinister undertone. A strange prickling sensation crawled up her spine as she replayed the conversation, the casual dismissal of a decades-old mystery that was now her house's legacy. She felt her heart thud a rapid tattoo against her ribs.

Her fingers danced over the cold metal of the doorknob to the master bedroom. She stepped inside, the air in the room heavy and close. The late afternoon light cast long, dancing shadows, making it difficult to discern what was truly there. She ran a hand over the freshly painted walls, the surface smooth and deceptively serene.

“This is ridiculous,” she muttered, her voice a strained whisper, as she scanned the space, the thought of someone dying here pressing heavily on her mind. She shivered, though the temperature in the room was fine.
