The news had broken on the local news: the quiet, charming house she'd just purchased was the site of an unsolved homicide from twenty years ago. Her breath hitched.

She stood abruptly, moving swiftly through the kitchen. She checked all the locks on the doors, even though she knew they were secure. The need to reinforce her safety was overwhelming. She kept scanning the shadows that stretched out from under the furniture.

Sarah turned off all the lights, wanting the peace of the darkness, but now it felt suffocating. Her eyes adjusted slowly, she began to imagine the events that unfolded here. The air felt thick, heavy with an unseen presence. She thought of calling a friend but decided against it, she didn’t want to burden them with her terror.
