Mr. Johnson felt like he could run a marathon. The end of the year was fast approaching, and every detail had to be finalized. He’d barely eaten all day. A young woman, a former student, entered his classroom. She carried a small, beautifully decorated cake.

"Mr. Johnson," she said, her voice filled with a familiar enthusiasm. "I wanted to show my appreciation for everything." He stared at the cake, the colors popping. He was suddenly aware of the faint smell of vanilla. He felt a burst of happiness. He felt a sudden urge to laugh.
