The silence of the evening was broken only by the distant barking of a dog and the relentless thumping of my own pulse. I leaned against the cold brick of my house, my eyes fixed on the lights illuminating Mr. Fitzwilliam’s new swimming pool. It wasn’t just a pool; it was an entire backyard transformed into a paradise. A paradise I couldn't afford to even dream of.

My teeth clicked together. The air felt thin, making it difficult to breathe properly. The image of Mr. Fitzwilliam, always so amiable and unassuming, casually sipping champagne by his pool, played over and over in my mind. He’d always acted like he was just like us.

My hands clenched into fists. I wanted to scream, to lash out. The anger and the envy I felt made me feel like I was going to explode. I couldn’t stand this.
