The setting sun cast long shadows across the neatly manicured lawns of the neighborhood, but for Peter, the beauty of the scene was completely lost. His gaze was fixed on the new, state-of-the-art security system being installed at Mr. Carter’s house. He felt the rapid, shallow breaths.

He swallowed hard. He felt like his heart was trying to escape his chest. He was constantly going back to the moment he heard about the business Mr. Carter was involved with.

Peter felt an overwhelming need to distance himself from his neighbor. He slammed the front door shut, a sound that echoed the turmoil within him. The world was suddenly a much scarier place.
