He awoke with a jolt, instantly awake, instantly aware. The simple act of breathing felt exhilarating. He could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator, the distant rumble of a passing truck. Everything was crisp, clear, and vivid.

He devoured his breakfast, unable to eat quickly enough. His thoughts raced, leaping from one idea to the next. He felt driven, unstoppable.

Later, at a support group meeting, he saw her across the room. She was practically vibrating, her eyes shining. They shared a knowing glance, an unspoken acknowledgment of their shared experience.

“Is it always like this?” he asked.
