The doorbell chimed, a bright, insistent sound that sliced through the quiet of the morning. Sarah practically leaped from the sofa, heart thrumming against her ribs. She smoothed down her already-perfectly-arranged hair and peered through the peephole. No one. But the scent of lilies, strong and heady, confirmed the delivery. She ripped the door open and snatched the bouquet from the delivery man, her fingers already fumbling at the ribbons.

A wave of frustration crashed over her. No note. Absolutely nothing. Who? The vibrant colours of the flowers felt somehow intrusive, a splash of joy in her carefully curated world. She spun back inside, placing the arrangement on the antique table with a decisive clunk.

Her mind raced. Had she forgotten a birthday? Was it a romantic gesture from that guy at the coffee shop? Suddenly, everything felt charged with significance. She checked her phone for missed calls, for emails, for any clue. Her gaze darted from the screen to the flowers, back and forth, as if the answer lay hidden somewhere in the digital ether.
