"Well, now," she muttered, a low growl escaping her throat as she studied the lilies. The scent, previously a welcome change from the stale air of the office, now felt like a taunt. No card. Who? She had a carefully constructed world that she guarded ferociously. An intrusion.

She circled the arrangement, her back stiff, her eyes constantly scanning. She checked the locks on the doors, then the windows. Every shadow, every rustle of leaves outside, became a potential threat.

She stalked into the kitchen, grabbing a knife from the block. The steel gleamed in the light. She sliced through the twine, severing the stems, her movements precise and deliberate.
