The coffee cup trembled in Clara's hand. The novel, “Our Secret,” was nestled beside her on the kitchen table. Each sentence was a violation, a trespass. Her boyfriend, Thomas, had meticulously documented their life, twisting it into a narrative she didn't recognize. Her cheeks felt flushed, her palms were slick with sweat.

She set down the cup with a decisive thud. The character based on herself was a caricature: a woman obsessed with control. A sudden, sharp laugh escaped her. The narrative was supposed to be a love story, yet the fictionalized Clara felt like an enemy. She felt a sharp, cutting sense of clarity, of understanding something fundamentally about Thomas that had eluded her for years.

She turned and headed for the door, her pace quickening. She needed to breathe, to be outside, to be anywhere but here, in the suffocating shadow of his words. She had to get away.
