He’d been enjoying a quiet afternoon, a book in his lap. Then, the news. Now, every creak of the aging building felt amplified. He found himself straightening, sitting upright on the sofa. Every instinct screamed at him to stay on high-guard.

His hand went to his chest, unconsciously checking the buttons of his shirt. He stood abruptly, the book falling unheeded to the floor. The quietness of the apartment felt oppressive, and he paced.

Outside, the city roared. He could hear the distant wail of a siren, a dog barking, a sudden, sharp laugh. Each sound felt like a blow. His gaze was constantly shifting, as if anticipating something unseen. He decided he needed to go outside, to be around people.
