The family gathering was disrupted by an unexpected announcement. Her aunt, a woman who had never shown any interest in spirituality, had become a Scientologist. Martha felt a rush of heat, as if she were in a sauna. The laughter and chatter around the table faded into a distant hum.

She found herself unable to breathe properly. The room’s familiar objects – the floral tablecloth, the antique china – seemed to shimmer and blur. The very air vibrated with a strange energy.

She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. She needed air. She had to sit down. She felt like she was trapped in a dream.
