"Did you hear that?" Mark asked his wife, his voice filled with a hushed excitement. "It's starting!" The faint sound of a saw cut through the quiet afternoon. Their neighbors, the Williamses, were finally starting their addition.

Mark leaped from the couch and raced to the window, his heart thrumming. He felt a ridiculous compulsion to watch the entire spectacle. He hadn't felt this alive in ages.

He watched as the first walls went up. He barely slept, the sheer audacity of the project fueling him. The world was new, a blank canvas.
