The sudden sight of the ring nearly knocked him off his feet. John felt his legs grow weak. He steadied himself against the counter, his gaze fixated on the familiar setting, the perfectly imperfect shape of the amethyst. The familiar gleam… his grandmother, the stories, they all suddenly burst into a kaleidoscope.

He felt lightheaded, giddy. He felt a strange compulsion, an urge to purchase the ring immediately. He had to possess this treasure. He felt a warmth spread through him. The shopkeeper’s voice, asking a question, seemed miles away.
