The chipped porcelain teacup felt impossibly delicate in Amelia's calloused hands. She’d been paying rent, living alone, doing the whole “adulting” thing for a decade. Now, here she was, in her childhood kitchen, the floral wallpaper practically vibrating with familiarity. She carefully placed the cup back on the crocheted doily, a small, involuntary gasp escaping her lips.

Her mother, humming a jaunty tune, stirred something on the stove. "Everything alright, sweetie?"

Amelia nodded, a wide grin stretching across her face. "Everything is... wonderful," she managed, her voice thick with something she couldn't quite name. She felt a lightness, like a balloon straining at its string. The scent of her mother's cooking, a blend of cinnamon and something subtly savory, wrapped around her, a comforting hug she hadn't realized she’d craved.
