The clinking of glasses and the low hum of conversation in the bar were background noise as Ben showed Liam the ropes. He poured a perfect pint of Guinness, something he’d been doing for years. Now, this young man, brimming with enthusiasm, was being prepped to do the same.

He almost laughed, but then he quickly covered his mouth. The bar felt different today. He was showing Liam the secrets to a good pint and the best ways to clean the glasses. His words felt hollow, like he was delivering lines in a play.

He had to take a few deep breaths. The air was thick with the scent of beer, a smell that had comforted him for so long. It was an odd feeling that he was experiencing.
