The sterile environment of the surgical ward felt foreign as Dr. Evans watched young Dr. Miller, his replacement, stitch the fake skin. He had seen thousands of surgeries; the human body held no secrets from him. Now, he would be merely observing.

He felt something akin to wonder, or was it fear? He wasn't sure. His hands were still clasped behind his back, a nervous habit. He felt a wave of dizziness wash over him.

He was surprised by the sudden lightness in his chest. He cleared his throat. "Good, good. You've got the technique down, that's what matters." His voice felt foreign, detached. He found himself pacing. He did not know how he felt.
