He stared, jaw slack, at the empty park. Balloons, once proudly adorning the gazebo, were nowhere to be found. The caterers' van was a distant memory. His friends, who had promised a raucous celebration for his 30th, had vanished like phantoms. A flush crept up his neck, and he felt a peculiar lightness, as though he might float away. He pictured the cake, the music, the silly hats. A wide grin stretched across his face, and he began to laugh, a loud, booming sound that echoed across the deserted space.
