Gemotions

I felt a rush of heat to my face as I stared at the card. It was bright yellow, with a single, bold cupcake on the front. I don't get mail. Ever. And I certainly didn't expect a card. Especially not on my birthday.

I carried it inside, my hands shaking slightly, and placed it on the kitchen counter. I read the message: "You deserve this." Then, I just stood there.

I went to the pantry and rummaged through the shelves until I found a box of cake mix. I haven't baked in years. A strange sense of elation filled me, a light, bubbling sensation. I put on music and started to whisk.
