The email shimmered on her phone screen. "Your DNA results are in!" Sarah's fingers trembled slightly as she clicked it open. Scrolling through the percentages, a single name, a total stranger, jumped out at her: "Potential Parent: Eleanor Harding." A rush of warmth, a fizzing inside, made her breath catch. Eleanor Harding? Her adoptive parents, bless their hearts, had never mentioned a Harding. She reread it, her heart thudding a rapid tattoo against her ribs.

Her gaze drifted around the familiar living room, the cozy fireplace she'd known her entire life. Now, it seemed, there was a whole other life, another history, swirling just beyond the edges of her perception. She suddenly felt a lightness, as if she could float right through the ceiling and into the unknown. Grabbing her keys, she had to get out, had to move, had to do something.
