The sleek black cat rubbed against Jamie’s legs, purring loudly. Across the room, Oliver was scowling. “Jamie, my allergies! We discussed this.”

Jamie, however, was in another world. The cat’s velvety fur, the way it arched its back, the soft rumble of its purr - it was… captivating. She felt a lightness she hadn't felt in weeks. She had never known she needed this.

She bent down and stroked the cat. It was pure bliss. "Just one, Oliver," she pleaded, her voice barely above a whisper.
