Gemotions

The old house felt hollow, echoing with the silence left by his children's departures. John, restless, found himself exploring the basement, a place usually avoided. Behind a stack of forgotten photo albums, he found a battered shoebox. Inside, nested amongst dried flowers and pressed leaves, lay a letter. His breath hitched as he recognized the slant of his own handwriting.

He sat on the damp concrete floor, the air growing colder with each passing moment. He read the letter, which was a promise to himself, a pledge to chase his dreams. The words ignited a fire in him, a long-dormant ember. He realized he had become a version of himself he didn't recognize. He ran a hand through his hair, a faint, rueful chuckle escaping his lips. He'd almost forgotten he had once been so bold.
