"Impossible," Maya breathed, staring at the screen. The university’s official email was mocking her. Professor Klein, her thesis advisor, was departing. Her future, once clear, became clouded.

She was suddenly conscious of the gentle hum of the refrigerator. It seemed a loud symphony. She felt a strange tingling in her fingers, she clutched at the phone. She went to the window to breathe.

She laughed quietly, a sound of bewilderment. Then she started pacing, back and forth, the floorboards creaking under her steps. The idea of starting something new… was interesting. She opened the door, and went out.
