The envelope, pristine and sterile, lay on the kitchen table. Maya approached it hesitantly, as though it were a venomous snake. She’d been expecting a bill, or perhaps a junk mail. Not this. Her stomach churned. She picked it up, her fingers trembling so badly she could hardly grip it. The paper felt slick and foreign.

Her eyes scanned the words, her mind struggling to translate them into something comprehensible. She rubbed her temples, trying to clear the fog that seemed to have enveloped her brain. She walked towards the door and opened it and inhaled deeply. Everything in the world felt impossibly vivid.
