The world seemed to spin. John felt the blood drain from his face as Mark nonchalantly declared his intentions. His heart slammed against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the sudden silence in the room. He felt himself go numb.

John's jaw dropped, hanging slack. He felt an urge to shout, to argue, to deny it all, but the words wouldn't come. He just sat there, frozen, as if a spell had been cast on him.

He was stunned. The air felt thick, heavy, like wading through molasses. He felt an urge to just run away.
