Gemotions

The text message, so simple, so devastating, sat on Maya's phone screen. She read it again, and again, and again. Her vision blurred, and she blinked rapidly, willing the words to disappear, to rewrite themselves into something else. The sunlight streaming through her window seemed unnaturally bright, almost blinding.

She felt a strange lightness in her limbs, as if she could float away. Her fingers fumbled with the phone, dropping it onto her bed with a soft thud. A nervous giggle escaped her lips. This can’t be happening.

She wanted to call someone, anyone, to make sure this wasn't real. She felt like she was a character in a bad comedy.
