The oak, a titan in the neighborhood, lay prone across Mrs. Gable's meticulously manicured lawn. Sunlight, previously fractured by its canopy, now streamed directly onto the exposed earth. Sarah stood, mouth agape, hands clamped to her cheeks. She’d always admired the tree from her kitchen window, but this – this transformation of a living thing into a fallen monument – was something else entirely. She had to take it all in.

She slowly began to walk towards it, the crisp morning air chilling her skin. The sheer scale of the trunk was staggering; it was like the world had changed. Every step was taken with a sense of wonder. Her eyes traced the raw wood, the broken limbs, the exposed roots that clawed at the sky.
