The wind howled a vicious symphony throughout the night, but Amelia, wrapped in blankets, had slept soundly. When she opened her blinds in the morning, her world was altered. Across the street, the giant sycamore, a landmark of their cul-de-sac, was gone. She blinked, rubbed her eyes, then looked again. It was true. The tree was sprawled across the road, blocking traffic.

Her breath hitched in her throat. She ran outside, ignoring her robe and slippers. It was like something in a fairytale. The sheer magnitude of it, the raw power of nature on display, sent a shiver down her spine. The fallen giant was beautiful and terrifying.

She let out a gasp. She couldn’t stop staring.
