The news had been bad all week, but nothing, absolutely nothing, prepared Ben for this. He'd been inside, working, when the world outside his window went bananas. Now, standing on his front porch, he stared. The towering birch tree, a focal point of their block, was flat on Mr. Kim’s lawn, entangled with power lines.

He was practically speechless. He kept shaking his head, trying to process the enormity of the event. He had to go closer.

He walked toward the fallen tree. He felt like his heart was leaping in his chest. Everything looked different. He couldn’t process this new reality.
