The postman had barely left the gate when David was already ripping open the envelope. The paper was thin, the ink faded, and the handwriting unfamiliar, yet it was undeniably from Emily. He stood frozen, the world seeming to shrink to the size of the letter in his hands. He felt a peculiar stillness descend upon him, as if the very air around him had thickened. He felt the blood pulse in his ears, blocking out the usual sounds of the city. He didn't move for what felt like an hour, the letter still clutched in his hand.
