The musty scent of old paper and forgotten wood filled Amelia's nostrils as she lifted the lid. Inside, nestled on faded velvet, was a silver locket. It wasn't the expected legal documents or stocks her brother, Thomas, was sorting through in the other room. Her fingers trembled as she unclasped it.

The locket sprung open, revealing two tiny, intricately painted portraits. One was of a woman with her warm smile and the other a child with a mischievous glint in her eyes. It was like looking into a mirror. Amelia gasped, her breath hitching in her throat.
