The clinking of china and hushed voices drifted from the other side of the hedge. For weeks, John had noticed a rise in activity at the Millers' house: deliveries of gourmet food, the arrival of staff in crisp uniforms. But he assumed it was just a particularly lavish dinner party.

Then came the announcement. A private concert featuring an internationally renowned violinist. John almost choked on his cereal.

He peered through a gap in the hedge, observing the scene. He knew the Millers were the sort of people who took the bus. He now learned the Millers were the sort of people who could afford the price of admission to a private concert.
