A wave of disbelief washed over Maya as she stared at the grade. A D! She had always aced history; she practically lived in the library, poring over ancient texts. The professor had praised her insightful questions in class, telling her that her understanding was advanced.

She felt a strange lightness, like she was floating just above her desk. Her fingers traced the stark red ink, a mark that felt both foreign and intensely personal. A giggle escaped her, a nervous sound she didn't recognise. This couldn’t be right. There had to be some mistake.
