"Did you… did you see the email?" Sarah stammered, her voice barely a whisper as she sat across from her friend, Emily, in the campus coffee shop. The aroma of burnt coffee usually calmed her, but today it only seemed to amplify the buzzing in her ears. Emily nodded, her face pale.

A strange levity took hold of Sarah. She picked up her latte, twirling the spoon idly. The chipped ceramic of the cup, the worn tables, the familiar chatter of students – all these mundane details felt utterly transformed, imbued with an impossible significance.
