The delivery person simply placed the box on the counter and was gone. She slowly opened it, revealing a profusion of orchids, their delicate petals a perfect, almost unreal, shade of lavender. Her heart did a strange little flutter.

She sank onto a nearby stool, utterly captivated. She had spent the last several months in a haze of routine and quiet despair. This…this was something else entirely.

She felt a warmth blooming in her chest, spreading through her limbs. Tears, unshed for months, pricked at her eyes. She felt…lighter. She carefully ran her fingers over the smooth petals, a smile spreading across her face.
