The news hit Brenda like a tidal wave. She had to sit down, her legs suddenly shaky. She gripped the arms of her armchair, her knuckles turning white. She blinked rapidly, trying to clear the fog in her brain. She looked around her apartment, seeing it with new eyes, a new perspective.

Her mind raced, the usual order of her thoughts dissolving into a jumble of what-ifs and could-bes. She ran her hands through her hair, a nervous gesture she hadn't done since she was a teenager.
