From the moment he received the email, David felt a sense of unreality. "Congratulations," the message began, and then went on to say his essay was chosen for the school's admissions website. He hadn’t expected this. He kept clicking back and forth between the email and the website.

He'd written about his struggle with dyslexia, a subject he'd kept relatively private. Now, he'd opened himself up for everyone to read. He suddenly felt exposed, yet at the same time, empowered. He spun around in his chair, a giddy laugh escaping his lips.

He looked around his room, and it felt new, transformed. He knew his parents would be proud, and that idea sent another jolt of something unexpected through him. He decided to call his best friend, who he knew would understand his elation.
