Dad, usually a picture of stoic practicality, sat opposite me, beaming. “I’ve found my truth!” he declared, gesturing widely. His announcement: He was now a follower of a new age philosophy revolving around crystals and chakras. A small twitch started in my left cheek.

The air felt thick with the scent of sandalwood, a smell I usually associated with the overpriced incense shop in the mall. He picked up a large, amethyst geode. “This baby is aligned with the cosmic forces!” he announced. A little chuckle slipped out.

I took a sip of my tea, feeling a strange lightness in my stomach. The vision of Dad, consulting crystals before paying bills, was… interesting. This was going to make family gatherings much more entertaining.
