"Think of the possibilities!" Grandma Dorothy declared, her voice cracking slightly with the effort. She held up the tarnished silver tea service, the centerpiece of every family gathering for as long as I could remember. I watched her, the corners of my mouth tilting upwards.

She had spent years lecturing us about its sacredness. Now, a hefty check was the most important thing. I shifted my weight, trying not to laugh out loud.

The sheer absurdity of the situation tickled my ribs. She clearly thought she was being terribly clever. The gleam in her eye, the frantic way she clutched the teapot, it was almost too much.
