The rejection letter was a masterpiece of professional courtesy, a carefully worded explanation of why her manuscript was, essentially, not good enough. From his armchair, nestled amidst overflowing bookshelves, James read the letter, his lips curling into a smile.

He slowly folded the letter, then tucked it into his pocket. He picked up his pipe, filled it with tobacco, and lit it with a match, the small flame casting dancing shadows on the walls.

He leaned back, a small smile playing on his lips, and exhaled a long plume of smoke. "Well then," he murmured, "time to prove them wrong." He picked up his pen and began to write, his imagination already soaring.
