The text notification pinged, and Leo’s fingers itched with an irrepressible impulse to tap the reply button. He’d been expecting something momentous ever since Chloe had called earlier. Now, it was official: she was off to Seattle. He almost snorted out loud.

He sat back in his chair, tapping a pen against his teeth, a light drumming rhythm.

He imagined Chloe, her face etched with a look of worry. He replied back immediately, “Wowza! Send me some photos of the Space Needle, yeah?”

He sent a string of laughing emojis.

He then got up and went to the fridge. The prospect of having to fly up to visit her felt delightfully inconvenient, like an unexpected vacation.
