The heat surged through her. Sweat beaded on her forehead, despite the cool air conditioning blasting in her face. Her son, Ben, had proclaimed his conversion to the Church of Scientology, a religion she regarded with deep suspicion. She had sat there, calmly nodding, pretending to understand, but inside, a storm raged. She rose from her seat abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor. “I need some air,” she mumbled, her voice tight, avoiding eye contact. She couldn’t stand to look at him, at his newfound zeal.
