He stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror, the book lying open on the counter. The words, the perceptions, the judgments—they felt like a physical weight pressing down on him. David felt his face heat, a silent fire spreading through him. He hated the way he looked, the way he was being presented in this book.

He splashed cold water on his face, trying to cool the internal heat. He needed to escape this feeling of powerlessness. He turned off the faucet and grabbed a towel. He felt the need to distance himself from the situation, to find somewhere else.
