The afternoon sun blazed down on him, turning the freshly cut wood of the fence into a blinding white. He squinted, his chest a tight knot. *They’re doing it now.*

He watched them from his window, their laughter floating on the breeze. He could feel a rising heat in his gut, a slow, burning poison. He clenched his fists, nails digging into his palms.

He turned away from the scene, his shoulders slumped. He slammed his fist against the wall, a sound that quickly dissolved into the empty, sunlit house.
