He saw the posts in the ground, the skeletal framework of the monstrosity. His blood boiled. They were already claiming his space, building their fortress.

He kicked a small pebble across his yard, sending it skittering toward the fence line. He felt a tremor in his hands, a surge of adrenaline. He wanted to take a sledgehammer to it.

He took a deep breath. He would not give them the satisfaction. He went back inside, and closed the curtains, the sun's glare the only thing he could bear.
